What lies behind a difference of several thousand euros for the same operation, and why the lowest price is rarely the cheapest option.
The same procedure name can cover quotes that differ by several thousand euros. This is confusing and, understandably, raises suspicion — that someone is overcharging, or that someone is cutting corners.
The truth is that the price includes things you cannot see from the name of the operation.
What the price depends on
The extent of the operation itself. Abdominoplasty with plication of the abdominal wall and abdominoplasty without it are two different operations with the same name. The same applies to a facelift with or without work on the neck.
Anaesthesia. Local, local with sedation, or general — three different prices, because they involve three different levels of care and monitoring, including whether an anaesthetist is present.
The facility. A consulting room, a medical centre, or a hospital with an operating theatre suite and the ability to monitor you after the operation. The equipment and set-up differ, and this is reflected in the price.
Length of stay. Day case, one night or longer.
Materials. With implants, the differences between manufacturers are real. The same goes for fillers.
What is included afterwards. Dressings, removal of stitches, follow-up appointments, compression garments, histological examination.
Why the website says “from”
Because the final price is set after an examination. The same procedure in two patients can mean a different duration, a different technique and a different anaesthetic.
The published figure is a genuine starting point, not an advertising number. The exact price is agreed at the consultation, once it is clear exactly what will be done. Many operations are made up of several separate components: a facelift is often combined with neck correction and fat grafting (lipofilling), which are three different procedures in a single operating session, and their prices are added together. That is why the same word in two quotes can mean a completely different amount of work.
What to ask before comparing
- What type of anaesthesia is included in the price
- Where the operation will take place
- How many nights are included
- Whether pre-operative tests are included
- Whether follow-up appointments and removal of stitches are included
- Whether the compression garment is included
- Who will personally perform my operation
- What happens financially if a revision is needed
If two quotes differ widely, the answers to these questions usually explain why.
When a low price is a warning sign
- A price given over the phone or from a photo, without an examination
- An offer with a deadline, or a discount for deciding quickly
- No clear answer on where exactly the operation will take place
- A specific result is promised
- No discussion of the risks
The reverse is also true
A high price on its own guarantees nothing. It is an indicator not of quality but of what is included and where the operation takes place.
The useful criterion is not the amount but transparency: do you understand exactly what you are paying for, what comes next, and what happens if something does not go to plan?
