PRP is not a cure-all and does not always help. Where there is a basis for it, where the evidence is weaker and what to expect.
PRP (platelet-rich plasma) is advertised as a universal solution — for skin, hair, joints and scars. The truth is more modest: in some cases it helps, in others the effect is small, and in others unproven.
What it is
A small amount of your blood is taken and centrifuged, the concentrated plasma with platelets and growth factors is separated and injected into the target area. Because it comes from your own blood, the risk of an allergic reaction is low. The result depends strongly on the quality of the blood taken, which cannot always be assessed.
Why results differ
- There is no single standard — different kits and techniques give different platelet concentrations and a different composition.
- The frequency and the number of sessions also differ.
- That is why studies are hard to compare, and promises in advertising are often bigger than the evidence.
Where there is the best basis
- Androgenetic hair loss at an early stage — there are data for improved density, but not in everyone and not for ever.
- Knee osteoarthritis of mild to moderate degree — relief in some patients.
Face and skin
For facial rejuvenation PRP can improve the quality of the skin — finer lines, slightly better texture and freshness. The evidence is weaker and of low quality, and the effect is moderate.
- It does not lift sagging tissue.
- It does not replace the volume that filler gives.
- It does not replace Botox and is not an alternative to surgery.
What to expect
- Usually a series of 3 sessions at 4–6 week intervals and maintenance later.
- The improvement is gradual — seen after 2–3 months.
- Swelling, redness and small bruises in the first days.
When PRP is not suitable
In blood diseases, a low platelet count, an active infection in the area, cancer, and when taking blood-thinning medicines — discuss it with the doctor beforehand.
What cannot be promised
A “facelift-like” effect, stopping hair loss in advanced alopecia, or a guaranteed result in everyone. If a clinic promises something like this, that is a reason for caution.
